Hugo Boss started his clothing company in 1923 in Metzingen, Germany where it is still based. In 1930 Hugo Boss was forced into bankruptcy and immediately set up a new business. In 1931 he became a member of the Nazi party. With the rise of Adolf Hitler in 1933 Boss became official supplier of uniforms of the SS, SA, Hilter Youth, NSKK and other party organisations. It has never been proven if Hugo Boss was an active member of the Nazi party or just a way to survive the war. He died in 1948. Nineteen years after he died, 2 of his grandsons, Uwe and Jochen Holy, took over the company. They turned the company completely around by steering it to a new and promising direction - men's clothing. In 1993 Hugo Boss launched its first fragrance.
