Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lifshitz on October 14, 1939 in Bronx, New York. At a young age, he began developing a great sense of fashion. He got a job after school when he was twelve and used his extra money to buy expensive name brand suits.
After high school, Ralph Lauren then started studying business at the City College of New York, but he dropped out. While he was still in school, he had a day job as a salesman and he took classes at night.
Ralph Lauren History: The brand was launched in 1967 when Ralph Lauren got a $50,000 loan. Prior to starting Ralph Lauren, he worked for Brooks Brothers. In 1968 he started a line of men's ties. By 1969 he had opened a boutique store within the Manhattan department store Bloomingdale's. In 1971, Polo Ralph Lauren launched its first women's collection and then his first standalone store in Beverly Hills, California. Ten years later, in 1981, the brand went global with its first international store opening on London's New Bond Street.
In the early 1980s, Ralph Lauren's name defined the business suit and his clothing became very popular. He expanded into other areas, including casual shirts and pants. He was experimenting in other areas such as furniture and linens that proved to be successful.
Since then, his small store in New York has expanded into a billion dollar company that sells its products worldwide. His style and label have prevailed throughout the last few decades - with clothing that is simple, yet very stylish. The Ralph Lauren brand has now become to represent high quality clothes that are built from fine materials and manufactured carefully. Ralph is still able to closely control his company as he owns 90% of the Ralph Lauren shares.
